Canberra, July 17: A contingent from the Indian Air Force (IAF) has arrived in Australia to participate in the Pitch Black 2026 exercise. This significant military drill will take place from July 20 to August 7 at the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) bases in Darwin, Tindal, and Amberley in northern Australia. Approximately 100 jet aircraft from around 20 countries and over 2,500 personnel will take part in this exercise.
The IAF has deployed four Rafale jets and two C-17 aircraft, along with more than 120 air warriors, to Australia for this event. This move represents a further step in enhancing defense cooperation between India and Australia.
The Indian High Commission in Canberra announced the arrival of the IAF contingent on social media platform X, stating, “The Indian High Commission is proud to welcome the IAF contingent in Darwin, which includes four Rafale jets and two C-17 aircraft, with over 120 air warriors participating in the RAAF’s major air exercise, Pitch Black 2026.”
The High Commission emphasized that this deployment reflects India’s commitment to strengthening military partnerships with allied nations and enhancing joint operational capabilities. It noted, “In the next three weeks, our air warriors will fly alongside their counterparts from other countries. The aim is to improve coordination, refine combat flying skills, strengthen relationships, and build enduring partnerships.”
The IAF contingent will engage in complex aerial exercises alongside air forces from Indo-Pacific and European nations. This will provide an opportunity to enhance interoperability, exchange operational information, and strengthen multilateral defense relations.
Since 1983, the Pitch Black exercise has been the RAAF’s premier international air combat exercise. This year’s event will see the participation of Japan’s Air Self-Defense Force with F-35 Lightning II fighter jets and Indonesia’s T-50i Golden Eagle aircraft for the first time, while Finland and Sweden will also join with their personnel for the first time. Aircraft from the United States, Japan, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, South Korea, India, Singapore, Germany, France, and Spain will also be involved. Additionally, military personnel from New Zealand, Fiji, Canada, Brunei, Malaysia, Finland, and Sweden will participate.
Discussing the significance of the exercise, Pitch Black 2026 Commander Air Commodore Matthew McCormack stated, “Pitch Black 2026 is our largest collective training activity with our allies and partner nations.”
