New Delhi, March 15: Surya Kumar Yadav, who led India to victory in the T20 World Cup 2026, emphasized that the team’s recent success was built on a deliberate strategy of minimal changes in player selection and unwavering trust in a core group of players.
During a panel discussion at the BCCI Awards ceremony in New Delhi, Surya Kumar shared insights into the careful management of the team over the past two years. He stated, “It wasn’t that difficult. Since our journey began under Rahul Sir’s leadership in 2024, we understood the importance of showing trust and confidence in our players. In sports, things don’t always go well. There are many ups and downs, but you must have faith in your players. As we started the new cycle for the T20 World Cup 2026, that was our goal. Leading up to the tournament, we aimed to make as few changes as possible.”
He added, “When you enter a major tournament, it’s crucial to stand by the players who have performed well for you over the past two years. We always knew we had built a super team. As Gautam Bhai often says, we have chosen a super team, and we should stick with them.”
In the T20 World Cup 2026, India’s batting order collapsed against the USA, but Surya Kumar rescued the team with a remarkable innings of 84 runs.
The captain remarked, “You are right; we were the favorites going into the tournament. However, knowing we were playing in our own country, in front of our home crowd, added excitement but also immense pressure. We were quite nervous, as you could see in our first match against the USA. The pressure was intense when playing at home.”
Surya Kumar reflected philosophically on how quickly the momentum can shift in T20 cricket. “Even 10-15 minutes can feel like a long time. The changes can happen in just one over. We tried to play our best cricket, put in our full effort, and keep things as simple as possible. I believe the boys did just that for me.”
With cricket’s inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, Surya Kumar did not hide his ambitions of adding an Olympic gold to his growing collection of ICC trophies. He stated, “It’s fantastic that a major event is happening, and cricket is part of it. Of course, it would be special. That year, there are two events: the T20 World Cup and the Olympics. So why not? If we’ve won two in a row, why not aim for three in T20 and definitely go for the Olympic gold as well?”
