Surge in Auto LPG Sales in April Amid Supply Stability

New Delhi, April 15: The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas reported on Wednesday that the average auto LPG sales by public sector oil companies have surged to 282 metric tons per day in April, up from 177 metric tons per day in February. This increase is attributed to the stable supply maintained for both the domestic and transportation sectors.

Since March 14 of this year, a total of 134,226 metric tons of commercial LPG has been sold, which includes over 8,000 metric tons of auto LPG.

From March 23 onwards, more than 1.46 million 5-kilogram free trade LPG cylinders have been sold, primarily utilized by migrant workers.

A three-member committee consisting of executive directors from IOC, HPCL, and BPCL is coordinating with state officials and industry bodies to plan the distribution of commercial LPG.

As of March 2026, around 450,000 PNG connections have begun receiving gas supply, with nearly 500,000 additional customers registered for new connections. Over 34,200 PNG customers have surrendered their LPG connections as the government encourages a shift to natural gas. This initiative is in response to the impact of ongoing conflicts in the Middle East on LPG imports.

To curb hoarding and black marketing of LPG, strict actions are being enforced nationwide. On Tuesday, over 2,100 locations were raided, resulting in the seizure of approximately 450 cylinders. Government oil marketing companies have intensified surprise inspections, imposing fines on 237 LPG distributorships and suspending 58.

Despite the current geopolitical challenges, the government has prioritized the supply of domestic LPG and PNG, especially for hospitals and educational institutions.

Citizens are advised against panic buying of petrol, diesel, and LPG, and are encouraged to rely solely on official sources for information. LPG consumers are requested to utilize digital booking platforms and avoid visiting distributors.
