Supreme Court Takes a Firm Stand on Airline Ticket Price Hikes During Festivals

New Delhi, August 17: The Supreme Court has adopted a strict stance regarding the sudden increase in airline ticket prices during festivals and holidays. On Monday, the court stated that if airlines do not comply with regulations, their flights should be grounded.

During the hearing of a petition concerning the spike in ticket prices, Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta expressed concerns about the unclear situation regarding the enforcement and regulation of passenger welfare measures.

Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Anil Kaushik informed the court that the process of establishing rules related to airfares and fees is in its final stages. He indicated that it would take three weeks to complete this process, after which the finalized regulations would be presented to the court.

The Supreme Court accepted ASG’s request for three weeks and scheduled the next hearing for September 7.

Meanwhile, the petitioner expressed disappointment over the Civil Aviation Minister’s statement in Parliament, indicating that no action could be taken, and that there would be no cap on fares.

In a previous hearing, the Supreme Court remarked that the arbitrary pricing by airlines in determining fares is akin to exploiting passengers, urging the government to take steps to provide relief to travelers.

Social activist S. Lakshminarayanan filed the petition, alleging that airlines impose unfair pricing practices and additional charges. The petition calls for the establishment of a regulatory body to create clear rules and ensure compliance with these regulations.
