Supreme Court Cuts Nomination Fee for Disabled Candidates in Delhi Bar Council Polls

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has granted significant relief to physically disabled lawyers contesting elections for the Delhi Bar Council (DBC). On Monday, the apex court reduced the nomination fee for disabled candidates from ₹1.25 lakh to ₹15,000. This decision is being seen as a major development in ensuring greater inclusivity.

The matter came up during the hearing of a petition filed by advocate Pankaj Sinha, who himself is visually impaired. He had made two key demands before the Supreme Court. Firstly, he sought a reduction in the high nomination fee for physically disabled candidates in the Delhi Bar Council elections. Secondly, he appealed for the introduction of reservation for disabled lawyers within the council.

The Supreme Court accepted the first demand and ordered the nomination fee to be brought down to ₹15,000 for physically disabled candidates. However, the court has yet to give a final ruling on the second demand concerning reservation. It has decided to hold further detailed discussions and hear all stakeholders before arriving at a decision on this issue.

This judgment marks an important step towards facilitating greater participation of disabled lawyers in the democratic process of the Delhi Bar Council.
