Sunil Jakhar Urges Amit Shah to Investigate Drug Trade from Punjab Jails
BJP leader Sunil Jakhar has requested a probe into the drug trade operating from Punjabs jails, seeking NIA and ED investigations.

Chandigarh, October 17 (Daily Kiran) : Sunil Jakhar, a prominent BJP leader, has reached out to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging an investigation into the drug trade allegedly operating from Punjab’s prisons. In his letter, he requested that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) look into the drug trafficking activities, while the Enforcement Directorate (ED) should investigate related money laundering cases.
Jakhar made the announcement on social media platform ‘X’, highlighting the need for a thorough inquiry into the drug operations allegedly sanctioned by the government. He emphasized that the Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has failed to curb the drug menace affecting the state.
In his letter, Jakhar pointed out the deteriorating situation in Punjab due to drugs. He referenced a recent incident in Mansa where a young man was shot for opposing drug sales, a case that prompted the Home Ministry to seek a response from Punjab’s Chief Secretary.
The BJP leader also recalled a significant case involving a drug inspector in Mansa, who was arrested by Punjab Police in 2024. Authorities seized assets worth millions from him, including ₹7.09 crore across 24 bank accounts, cash, gold, foreign currency, and real estate valued at ₹2.40 crore. The state’s Director General of Police confirmed that this inspector was allegedly leading a gang that collaborated with incarcerated traffickers to facilitate drug sales.
Jakhar asserted that this case is linked to a broader network of drug trafficking from prisons, including cross-border smuggling and substantial financial assets. He criticized the Punjab government for not requesting an NIA investigation or referring the matter to the ED.
He further alleged that following his release on bail, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government not only reinstated the drug inspector but also assigned him a significant position within the department’s headquarters.
In his letter, Jakhar demanded that the investigations by the NIA and ED focus on the case involving the drug inspector, Sheesham Kumar. He called for accountability to uncover the individuals behind this drug network and to determine who authorized the inspector’s reinstatement, despite his involvement in illegal activities. This inquiry is crucial for dismantling the drug trade operating with government protection from within the jails and for exposing the money laundering operations tied to it.
