Successful Testing of Military Combat Parachute System at 22,000 Feet

New Delhi, August 26: India has achieved a significant milestone in enhancing the parachute capabilities of its soldiers in high-altitude areas. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully tested the Military Combat Parachute System (MCPS) at the world’s highest drop zone, Nyoma’s Mud Drop Zone, designed and developed by the Agra-based Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE).

During this test, trained jumpers from ADE jumped from an altitude of approximately 22,000 feet, where the temperature was around minus 15 degrees Celsius. Despite these challenging conditions, the parachute system and all associated indigenous subsystems were successfully utilized. The main test jumper, Wing Commander Rahul Jha, along with MWO R.J. Singh and MWO Vivek Tiwari, executed the jump from this height.

According to DRDO, the MCPS was successfully deployed at 20,000 feet during the jump. The test jumpers then descended in a controlled manner, landing safely at an altitude of 13,700 feet. Notably, this test involved not only the parachute but also other critical equipment, including an indigenous para-computer, oxygen system, and special jumpsuits. The entire system proved reliable even at extreme altitudes.

The test demonstrated that the MCPS can operate effectively in harsh conditions, such as extremely low temperatures and high altitudes. The successful results confirm its reliability, effectiveness, and tactical utility.

Rapid deployment of soldiers and essential resources in high-altitude military operations is crucial. Therefore, this indigenous military combat parachute system is vital. It enhances the Indian Armed Forces’ capability for special operations and quick deployment in elevated terrains. This successful test of the MCPS is regarded as another significant achievement towards self-reliance in India’s defense technologies.
