Subhashini Ali Questions BJPs Commitment to Womens Bill, Promises Womens Response

New Delhi, April 20: CPI(M) leader Subhashini Ali has raised concerns regarding the BJP’s intentions after the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill was rejected in the Lok Sabha. She stated that women will never forgive the BJP for repeatedly undermining this crucial legislation.

In an interview, Ali emphasized that the CPI(M) has consistently issued a whip to ensure its members’ presence whenever the bill was presented in the House, a practice not followed by other parties. She noted that all parties have opposed the bill for various reasons, which has led to its stagnation for years.

Ali accused the BJP of dishonesty, explaining that while they passed the bill in 2023, they attached conditions that it would only be implemented after a census and delimitation. Following its passage, the BJP attempted to introduce delimitation without discussion, aiming to increase parliamentary seats without consulting the states. This approach could benefit some states while disadvantaging others.

She pointed out that delimitation cannot solely rely on census data, as there are additional criteria that must be considered. The BJP’s strategy appears to focus on areas where they have a strong voter base while diminishing representation in regions where their support is weaker. Ali argued that this tactic is aimed at consolidating their power under the guise of implementing the Women’s Reservation Bill.

Ali expressed relief that the bill did not pass, claiming it was unconstitutional and would have had long-lasting negative effects on the populace. After the bill’s failure, a notification was issued for the bill passed in 2023, indicating that it is now law. She stated that without this notification, the bill would have lapsed, revealing the BJP’s true intentions.

She demanded that the law be implemented without additional conditions. No one opposed the bill; instead, questions were raised about why the 2023 legislation is not being enforced.

Ali challenged the BJP, asking why they do not provide the promised 33% reservation for women without attaching new conditions. She highlighted that if SC/ST seats increase post-delimitation, the BJP’s plan to implement delimitation without a census would not benefit them either. She labeled the BJP as anti-women, asserting that they aim to maintain the caste system.

Ali also criticized the BJP’s response to incidents of violence against women, stating that when such events occur, the BJP either intervenes to protect the perpetrators or those involved are linked to their party. She described the BJP as a party that masquerades as a champion of women’s rights while seeking votes.

Furthermore, she questioned the timing of the special session of the House, suggesting that the BJP is attempting to push through significant decisions amidst elections. She asserted that women across the country will respond to these actions. Ali noted that globally, those who perpetrate the most violence against women often try to present themselves as their allies.

She specifically called out Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, demanding accountability for Uttar Pradesh’s high rates of rape and violence against women, as well as the harassment of young girls in the state.
