Ranchi, August 10: In Jharkhand, students are gearing up for a significant assembly siege on August 10, protesting alleged irregularities and paper leaks in recruitment exams. A large number of students have started arriving in Ranchi from various districts ahead of the planned demonstration. Many are gathering at the Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium, with some opting to spend the night in the stadium premises.
The increasing crowd of students is clearly visible at the stadium. Many students were seen resting on the volleyball court and other areas. The protesting students assert that a substantial number will participate in the assembly siege on Monday to pressure the government regarding their demands.
They have declared that the movement will continue until all their primary demands are met, particularly the call to cancel the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) CGL exam.
The student protests have been ongoing for the past 16 days, stemming from alleged irregularities in the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and JSSC recruitment exams. On Sunday, the government held a third round of talks with student representatives, during which several key demands were accepted by the government.
In light of the students’ protests and allegations of irregularities, the decision was made to cancel the 14th JPSC Civil Services Preliminary Exam. Additionally, the government agreed to investigate financial transactions related to previous exams conducted by the controversial vendor agency TSR Data Processing Private Limited through the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
However, the government did not concede to the demand for the cancellation of the JSSC CGL exam. Instead, it decided to conduct a judicial inquiry into the allegations related to this exam. This decision has led to continued dissatisfaction among students, prompting them to announce the assembly siege.
The state government claims that many of the students’ key demands have already been accepted and that canceling the CGL exam is not feasible. They have also appealed to the protesting students to end their demonstrations.
Meanwhile, Minister Sudivya Kumar stated that the government will implement comprehensive policy reforms to ensure future recruitment exams are entirely transparent and free from fraud. A high-level committee will be formed, including experts and student representatives.
During the talks, ministers urged student leader Devendra Nath Mahto, who is on a hunger strike, to end his fast via video call. However, he has decided to continue his protest for now.
