Student Organization Demands Improved Hostel Facilities at Jesus and Mary College

New Delhi, September 16 (Daily Kiran) : Representatives from the Revolutionary Youth Organization (KYS) delivered a memorandum to the principal of Jesus and Mary College, Mauli K.A., alongside students from the college. This initiative aims to address the urgent need for hostel facilities for external students.

Bhim Kumar, a member of the KYS Delhi State Committee, stated that the delegation was led by activists Mudita and Amrita. The memorandum submission is part of a broader campaign initiated by KYS in response to the tragic collapse of the Satya Niketan building on September 6, which highlighted the lack of adequate hostel facilities for students.

During the meeting with the principal, the students raised concerns regarding the monitoring of female students through CCTV cameras installed in classrooms. They described this practice as unprecedented and condemned it as a misogynistic approach not seen elsewhere in Delhi University. KYS plans to continue discussions with the college administration on this issue in the coming days.

Following their meeting at Jesus and Mary College, the delegation also met with Haritma Chopra, the principal of Maitreyi College, to present another memorandum. They emphasized that the Satya Niketan incident was not merely a case of a building collapse; it underscored a long-standing issue regarding the lack of hostel facilities in colleges.

The statement further noted that due to inadequate hostel options, students are often forced to rent rooms in unsafe buildings or stay in paid guest accommodations located in insecure areas. This situation exposes them to harassment and exploitation from landlords, particularly affecting female students who face daily threats in unsafe environments.

KYS has urged college administrations to take immediate and concrete steps to provide hostel facilities for needy external students. The organization plans to intensify its campaign for hostel accommodations across Delhi University and other higher education institutions in the region.

The issue of monitoring female students at Jesus and Mary College will also be raised by KYS in future meetings with the college administration.
