Jamia Millia Islamia Forms Committee to Investigate Lizard Incident in School Hostel Food

New Delhi, September 14 (Daily Kiran) : Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has set up a four-member committee to investigate a troubling incident involving a lizard allegedly found in a student’s food bowl at the university’s school hostel. This incident prompted significant protests, with hundreds of students demonstrating outside the vice-chancellor’s office on September 12 and 13, claiming food contamination.

According to an official statement, the issue revolves around allegations that a lizard was discovered in a bowl of dal. The university is actively seeking assistance from government investigative agencies to examine CCTV footage related to the case. The footage reportedly shows a student carrying the bowl under a table in the mess, which led to a group of students raising concerns about the alleged contamination.

The university administration has decided that the committee will conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the circumstances leading up to the incident, including the roles and actions of those involved. The committee’s task is to determine whether the event was part of a deliberate attempt to disrupt or tarnish the reputation of the hostel mess.

JMI’s administration has expressed its concern over the incident, viewing it as a potential orchestrated effort to disrupt the normal functioning of the hostels and the broader academic environment through unfounded accusations and misinformation. They have stated that if any intentional wrongdoing or misconduct is confirmed, appropriate actions will be taken against those involved, in accordance with university regulations.

The university emphasized that its mess facilities have been serving students for decades, with regular monitoring of food quality and cleanliness conducted by the hostel administration, including the provost, wardens, caretakers, and well-functioning mess committees comprised of residents.

Furthermore, JMI officials, including the vice-chancellor and registrar, occasionally dine in the hostel messes to oversee food quality. The university also noted that its mess fees are among the lowest compared to other universities in the Delhi National Capital Region, while consistently striving to maintain high standards of food quality and hygiene.
