Former Germany international Thomas Strunz has backed Oliver Baumann to be named the number one goalkeeper for Germany at the upcoming World Cup, citing ongoing uncertainties surrounding Marc-André ter Stegen.
Speaking to Kicker magazine, Strunz said that coach Julian Nagelsmann is likely to settle the debate firmly in favour of Baumann. He emphasised that the coach’s priority in the coming months should be to establish a clear defensive lineup, including the goalkeeper position, ahead of the tournament scheduled from June 11 to July 19 across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
“Ter Stegen lacks rhythm, there are too many uncertainties,” Strunz stated, highlighting the challenges faced by the Barcelona goalkeeper. Ter Stegen was named Germany’s first choice in 2024 following Manuel Neuer’s international retirement. However, Strunz believes a decisive call by Nagelsmann would also end speculation about a possible Neuer return, which Neuer himself has dismissed.
Baumann, who plays for Hoffenheim, featured in all World Cup qualifying matches last autumn while Ter Stegen was recovering from back surgery. Although Ter Stegen is now fit, Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has preferred summer signing Joan Garcia as the club’s first-choice keeper, describing Ter Stegen’s recent Copa del Rey appearance as a one-off.
Ter Stegen’s future at Barcelona remains uncertain. Nagelsmann has underlined the importance of regular playing time for Ter Stegen to maintain his status as Germany’s top goalkeeper for the World Cup. Recent reports linked Ter Stegen with a loan move to Girona, but Barcelona sporting director Deco clarified on Movistar that no decisions have been made regarding his future.
Deco confirmed that Ter Stegen, who left the Spanish Super Cup camp in Saudi Arabia due to a knee problem, is currently undergoing treatment. The knee has been immobilised but the injury is not considered serious. Deco added that Ter Stegen’s previous knee issues naturally cause some concern following his return from injury.
With the World Cup approaching, the German camp awaits a definitive decision from Nagelsmann on who will guard the posts, as the goalkeeping situation remains a key talking point in the lead-up to the tournament.
