Rudrapur, September 1: The district administration in Rudrapur, Uttarakhand, has sealed the madrasa run by Maulana Mufti Mujib, known for his controversial statements against the government’s decision to close madrasas. The administration stated that the madrasa was operating without the necessary accreditation from the Minority Education Authority.
Recently, the Uttarakhand government dissolved the madrasa board and established the Minority Education Authority. This change mandates that all madrasas in the state obtain recognition from both the Minority Education Authority and the Uttarakhand Education Board. Following this directive, the administration is actively investigating and taking action regarding the accreditation and operation of madrasas across the state. Some clerics and Muslim leaders have united in opposition to this new regulation.
In Udham Singh Nagar district, the administration reported that there are currently 118 madrasas operating. Of these, five have already been closed, while approximately 60 have yet to apply for accreditation. The remaining madrasas have submitted online applications for recognition. The administration is now proceeding with the verification process based on these applications.
Among the institutions sealed is Madrasa Jamiyatul Hasanath, owned by Zahid Raza, which also lacked the necessary accreditation documents.
Dr. Parag Madhukar Dhakate, Secretary of the Minority Department, noted that previously, 452 madrasas were registered under the madrasa board. Now, these institutions must obtain recognition from the Minority Education Authority. He clarified that madrasas failing to follow the prescribed process will face closure. So far, around 200 applications have been received by the department, and spot surveys are being conducted to verify the status and documentation of these institutions.
Amidst the government’s strict stance on madrasas, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has reiterated that all institutions in Uttarakhand must adhere to laws and regulations. He emphasized that there is no place for extremist education in the land of the gods and that radical ideologies will not be tolerated. He also mentioned that a cleric accused of promoting extremism has been jailed, affirming that the law is taking its course.
