Sri Lanka Sets 164-Run Target Against Ireland in T20 World Cup

Colombo, February 8: The T20 World Cup 2026 match in Group B is underway between Sri Lanka and Ireland at the R. Premadasa Cricket Stadium in Colombo. Sri Lanka has set a target of 164 runs for Ireland to chase.

Ireland won the toss and opted to bowl first. Sri Lanka struggled to get off to a strong start. Pathum Nissanka and Kamil Mishara managed to score 28 runs for the first wicket in 4 overs. Mishara was dismissed for 14 runs off 11 balls, becoming the first wicket to fall.

Following this, Nissanka and Kusal Mendis formed a partnership of 34 runs for the second wicket off 26 balls, bringing the score to 62. However, Sri Lanka lost Nissanka as their second wicket. He scored 24 runs off 23 balls before being dismissed.

Sri Lanka quickly lost their third and fourth wickets, with Pawan Rathnayake scoring just 5 runs and Dunith Wellalage contributing 10 runs. At 86 runs with 4 wickets down in 13.5 overs, Sri Lanka needed a recovery. Kusal Mendis and Kamindu Mendis stepped up, adding 67 runs for the fifth wicket. Kamindu Mendis played a brisk innings, scoring 44 runs off 19 balls.

Kusal Mendis remained unbeaten, playing a crucial role in the innings. Coming in at number three, the wicketkeeper scored 56 runs off 43 balls, including 5 fours, helping Sri Lanka reach a total of 163 runs for the loss of 6 wickets.

For Ireland, Barry McCarthy and George Dockrell each took 2 wickets, while Mark Adair and Gareth Delany claimed 1 wicket each.

Ireland has a strong batting lineup. To defend the score of 163 runs, Sri Lanka will need to deliver tight bowling and excellent fielding.
