Colombo, February 10: Sri Lanka, co-host of the T20 World Cup 2026, has suffered a significant blow with the news that star spinner Wanindu Hasaranga is out of the tournament due to injury. Hasaranga sustained a hamstring injury during a match against Ireland in Colombo on Sunday.
An MRI scan conducted on Monday revealed a serious injury to his left hamstring. Following a review of his injury report by a specialist from the UK, it was confirmed that he would not participate in the T20 World Cup. According to Sri Lankan media, Hasaranga will be sidelined from cricket for approximately four weeks due to this injury.
His absence is a considerable loss for Sri Lanka. Hasaranga is not only a top-notch bowler but has also been instrumental in securing victories for the team with his lower-order batting. In the group stage match against Ireland, he played a crucial role, taking three wickets for just 25 runs in four overs.
To fill Hasaranga’s spot in the squad, leg-spinner Dushan Hemnath may be called up. The 31-year-old has played five ODIs and three T20s for Sri Lanka, claiming a total of six wickets.
Sri Lanka’s next group match is scheduled for February 12 against Oman in Pallekele, followed by a clash with Australia on February 16 and a final group game against Zimbabwe on February 19 in Colombo.
In their opening match against Ireland, Sri Lanka secured a 20-run victory. After a rocky start, they managed to score 163 runs for six wickets, thanks to Kamindu Mendis’s explosive 44 runs off 19 balls and Kusal Mendis’s unbeaten 56. Despite spirited efforts from Ross Adair (34 runs off 23 balls) and Harry Tector (40 runs off 34 balls), Ireland was bowled out for 143 runs in 19.5 overs.
