South Koreas Defense Minister to Attend Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore

Seoul, May 28: South Korea‘s Defense Minister, Ahn Gyu-baek, is set to travel to Singapore this weekend to participate in an annual security forum. The Ministry of National Defense announced this on Thursday. This visit comes at a time when global security conditions are highly unstable due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.

The ministry stated that Ahn will attend the 23rd Asia Security Conference, also known as the Shangri-La Dialogue, from Friday to Sunday. He will be joined by defense ministers from the United States, Japan, and several European and Indo-Pacific nations.

During the conference, Ahn will deliver a speech in the plenary session, addressing South Korea’s defense policy amid a rapidly changing security environment and associated challenges.

Additionally, he plans to hold bilateral meetings with counterparts from Japan, Australia, Norway, the Philippines, and Thailand. These discussions will focus on security issues and enhancing defense cooperation.

According to reports from Yonhap News Agency, Ahn also intends to meet with members of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate during the forum.

The Shangri-La Dialogue, which began in 2002, serves as a multilateral platform for discussing security situations in the Asia-Pacific region and worldwide, fostering cooperation among top defense and military officials.

Regarded as Asia’s premier annual defense and security conference, the event is organized by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) based in Singapore. It attracts defense ministers, military leaders, and security experts from over 40 countries, who engage in discussions on critical security challenges in the Indo-Pacific region and advance defense cooperation agreements.
