Seoul, August 5: South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has underscored the importance of maintaining peace on the Korean Peninsula. On Wednesday, he stated that ensuring stability in the region is his top priority amid current global instability. According to Lee, peace is not only a matter of security but is also intricately linked to the nation’s economy and the well-being of its citizens.
As reported by the Yonhap News Agency, President Lee made these remarks before receiving policy briefings from the ministries of Foreign Affairs, Unification, and Defense. He noted, “The world is undergoing significant changes and turmoil. In such times, maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula is crucial.” Lee emphasized that South Korea has previously experienced the adverse effects of disrupted peace, highlighting the importance of this issue.
He remarked, “Peace is food; peace is the economy.” According to the president, maintaining stability on the peninsula creates a favorable environment for economic activities and investments.
Lee also expressed concern that critical issues such as security and diplomacy have become points of contention among political parties in South Korea. He stated that the government will focus on delivering tangible results rather than creating noise.
The president instructed the Unification Ministry to continue the policy of peace and coexistence, despite the lack of consistent positive responses from North Korea. He acknowledged that improving relations after prolonged conflict and a lack of dialogue would not be easy, but efforts toward dialogue and peaceful coexistence must persist.
Lee is also deeply concerned about revitalizing the economy. According to Yonhap, he is expected to make a significant decision regarding the real estate market on Friday. A spokesperson for the president announced on Wednesday that a closed-door meeting will be held this week to review policies related to the real estate market. The aim is to increase housing supply and control soaring residential prices. Lee had issued the directive for this meeting earlier on Monday.
