Mumbai, August 21: Legendary actress Soukar Janaki, who graced Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam cinema for over seven decades, passed away on Friday at the age of 94. Her death has sent shockwaves through the South film industry. Many stars, including Junior NTR, Vishnu Manchu, and actor-director Prabhu Deva, have paid tribute to her memory.
Born Shankaramanchi Janaki, she had been facing health issues related to her age and was admitted to a hospital in Chennai. She took her last breath around 1:59 PM on Friday. Following the news of her passing, many from the film community expressed their condolences on social media, reminiscing about her extensive career.
Junior NTR expressed deep sorrow over her demise. He shared an emotional post on X, stating, “Soukar Janaki carved a unique identity in Telugu and Indian cinema. Her passing is incredibly sad. Her cinematic journey and characters will always remain alive in people’s memories. May God grant her soul peace.”
Vishnu Manchu also remembered her fondly in his post, saying, “I am deeply saddened by the news of Soukar Janaki’s passing. Her dignity, personality, and remarkable work will live on for generations. Today’s youth should watch her films and understand what a great artist she was. My heartfelt condolences to her family.”
Actor and director Prabhu Deva also paid tribute to Soukar Janaki, expressing his grief through a social media post.
Soukar Janaki’s film career was both lengthy and remarkable. She appeared in nearly 400 films, establishing her presence in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam cinema. Over her more than seventy-year career, she portrayed a variety of roles and witnessed the evolution of Indian cinema, maintaining her relevance throughout different eras.
Her contributions were recognized at the national level. In 2022, the Government of India honored her with the Padma Shri for her extensive contributions to Indian cinema and the arts.
