New Delhi, September 12 (Daily Kiran) : The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced that the strong participation of member and partner countries at the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi is a testament to the growing global trust in India’s presidency. This event, held on September 12, underscores the increasing significance of BRICS and its extended engagement with developing nations and the Global South.
During a media briefing on the sidelines of the summit, Sudhakar Dalela, Secretary of Economic Relations at the MEA, noted that this summit is the culmination of extensive preparations that began in January when India assumed the BRICS presidency.
Dalela shared that over 350 meetings were organized during India’s presidency, including ministerial meetings, working group sessions, business forums, and various public-oriented activities.
The first session of the BRICS leaders focused on “Strengthening Inclusive Global Governance and Multilateralism.” While each leader presented their national perspectives, there was a broad consensus on the need for more representative, inclusive, and effective global governance institutions that align with current global realities.
Leaders reiterated the necessity for comprehensive reforms in the United Nations, particularly the Security Council, to enhance the representation of developing countries and the Global South. They also emphasized the importance of reforming the international financial system to amplify the voices of developing nations.
The discussion reaffirmed the core principles of BRICS cooperation: mutual respect, equality, solidarity, openness, inclusivity, and consensus. Leaders agreed that differences should be resolved through dialogue and consultation.
Dalela mentioned that the leaders addressed ongoing global conflicts and economic challenges, stressing the importance of dialogue, diplomacy, and peaceful resolutions.
In his address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the need to strengthen the voice of the Global South and improve global governance structures. He emphasized that BRICS should focus on practical cooperation and development-oriented outcomes that positively impact people’s lives.
The Prime Minister proposed four new initiatives for BRICS cooperation, including a BRICS Troika mechanism, a roadmap for global governance reform, a Seafarer Emergency Support Initiative Network for distressed sailors, and a Global South Negotiation Support Initiative aimed at empowering officials and young professionals from the Global South.
Dalela concluded that the unanimous adoption of the New Delhi Declaration 2026 is a significant achievement of India’s presidency, demonstrating BRICS countries’ ability to reach consensus on globally important issues.
He noted that under India’s presidency, over 50 practical outcomes emerged from BRICS’s four priorities: resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability.
Additionally, BRICS leaders and delegations visited the India Innovates exhibition, showcasing India’s achievements and potential in innovation, entrepreneurship, technology, and development.
At the end of the briefing, Dalela stated that the success of any presidency is measured not just by the number of meetings held but by the quality of participation, the ability to build consensus, and the tangible results achieved. India is fully committed to implementing the New Delhi Declaration and all decisions made during the summit.
