Christchurch, March 28: Laura Wolvaardt, captain of the South Africa women’s cricket team, expressed confidence that her team will deliver their best performance in the upcoming three-match ODI series against New Zealand. South Africa faced a 1-4 defeat in the recent five-match T20 series against New Zealand.
The ODI series is deemed crucial for qualification for the 2029 World Cup. Ahead of the first ODI match on Sunday in Christchurch, Wolvaardt shared her trust in the team’s preparations.
“We have thoroughly discussed our previous mistakes and held several meetings. Clearly, we want to perform much better in this ODI series. This is a format where we have consistently excelled in recent months. Therefore, we need to reflect on what has worked for us, especially looking back at our successes in the World Cup,” she stated.
Despite the setbacks in T20, Wolvaardt is focusing on her team’s strengths in the 50-over format. “Perhaps we couldn’t implement our plans in T20 matches as we wanted, but I believe the strategies we have developed for ODIs are quite robust. This gives me hope that we will perform better this time,” she added.
South Africa has established itself as one of the top teams in ODI cricket. The team reached the semifinals in the 2022 World Cup and made it to the finals in 2025, where they faced a thrilling defeat against India. South Africa’s position in the ICC Women’s Championship rankings is also strong. Following a 2-1 series victory against Pakistan earlier this year, they currently rank third, behind New Zealand and Sri Lanka.
Wolvaardt emphasized the importance of each match in the championship context, stating, “Points are crucial. Obviously, these points are for the championship. We want to be in a position early on where we can qualify and not feel pressure at the end of the cycle. Hence, this match will be very important. We are eager to play our best cricket in this series, and we hope it brings out the best in our players.” The last encounter between South Africa and New Zealand in ODI format was during the World Cup, where South Africa secured a victory by six wickets.
