Sonam Wangchuks Wife Seeks High Court Intervention to Shift Him to Private Hospital

New Delhi, July 19: Sonam Wangchuk‘s wife, Geetanjali Angmo, has approached the Delhi High Court after her husband was unexpectedly shifted from the protest site at Jantar Mantar to Safdarjung Hospital. She has raised concerns about the hospital’s credibility and requested immediate hearing on her petition.

Geetanjali Angmo filed a petition seeking a referral for her husband to a private hospital, expressing her lack of trust in Safdarjung Hospital.

In her petition, she stated, “On Saturday, the police forcibly removed Sonam Wangchuk from the protest site without his consent, violating his fundamental rights, and took him to Safdarjung Hospital. The police misused the High Court’s orders.”

The petition further claimed, “At the time of his removal from the protest site, Sonam Wangchuk’s vital health parameters were stable, and he was under the care of qualified doctors. There was no medical emergency or other circumstances that warranted such a sudden and forced action. This removal was neither medically necessary nor legally justified. It is a clear violation of Sonam Wangchuk’s fundamental rights.”

She alleged that despite repeated requests, only selective information was provided to them. The family’s request to shift Sonam Wangchuk to another hospital was also denied. Geetanjali expressed concern for her husband’s health, stating that the alleged medical treatment was opaque and entirely secretive.

The petition also accused the authorities of keeping Sonam Wangchuk at Safdarjung Hospital against the family’s wishes. He has been denied access to his legal advisor and the doctors who have been treating him for the past 20 days. She noted that this action is entirely arbitrary, given that there is no legal order for his arrest or detention.

Geetanjali Angmo emphasized, “We are compelled to approach the High Court to obtain appropriate directions. These directives aim to ensure that the doctors who have been examining Sonam Wangchuk for the past 20 days and his legal advisor can meet him without any restrictions. He should be allowed to transfer to a private hospital as per the family’s wishes.”
