SRFTI Denies Allegations of Ignoring Student Safety Concerns

SRFTI refutes claims of neglecting student safety, emphasizing ongoing efforts to address concerns and maintain campus security.

Kolkata, October 31 (Daily Kiran) : The Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) in Kolkata has firmly rejected allegations that it neglected student safety concerns, labeling them as false and misleading. In a statement released by the registrar, the institute asserted that it has consistently taken steps to ensure student safety and address grievances.

The registrar clarified that permission for an event held on September 27 was granted prior to the current vice-chancellor’s tenure. Following the incident, the vice-chancellor visited the campus and promptly engaged in discussions with students and relevant officials.

According to the statement, the vice-chancellor met twice with student representatives and the dean of the film department, as well as senior officers from the Kolkata police. The first meeting took place at the police headquarters, while the second was held on campus. These meetings focused on discussing student safety concerns. Additionally, officials from the cyber cell were brought in to address students’ complaints regarding cyber safety.

The institute reported that local police advised students to exercise restraint and avoid activities that could escalate tensions. Despite this, some student groups organized solidarity marches and gatherings on campus and beyond without the institute’s permission from September 27 to October 4. These events featured political speakers and slogans.

Management stated that they maintained continuous coordination with police authorities after subsequent incidents, enhancing security both on campus and in surrounding areas. Medical assistance was provided to injured students, and professional organizations were contacted to offer psychological support to those experiencing emotional distress.

SRFTI also noted that FIRs related to the events of September 27 and October 4 have been filed with local police, who are taking appropriate legal action. The registrar mentioned that disciplinary measures have been initiated against individuals involved in vandalism, inflammatory writing, and unauthorized occupation of various areas on campus. Based on recommendations from the dean’s council, six students have been expelled for alleged misconduct, including threats and abusive behavior towards officials. One student reportedly physically assaulted the vice-chancellor.

The statement further indicated that following several incidents, including an unauthorized torch march on October 27, the institute sought police assistance due to reports of vandalism, threats, and intimidation of officials. The institute emphasized that such activities pose serious risks to students, staff, local residents, and institutional property.

SRFTI reiterated its commitment to addressing legitimate student grievances through dialogue, while also emphasizing the necessity of institutional discipline and mutual responsibility. Violence, threats, damage to public property, and disruption of academic activities cannot be justified under any circumstances.

In his remarks, the vice-chancellor expressed that faculty members are actively engaging with students to understand their genuine complaints and concerns. He expressed hope that through dialogue and mutual understanding, a resolution would be reached soon, allowing academic activities to return to normal.
