So Many Years Later, Somnath Temple Stands as a Symbol of India’s Courage and Pride

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi recalled the story of the Somnath temple’s destruction and revival, describing it as a symbol of India’s enduring civilisation and spirit. Exactly one thousand years ago, in 1026, the temple faced its first brutal attack. The intent was not just to destroy a temple but to crush the faith and cultural soul of India. Despite this, the Somnath temple stands tall today with pride, demonstrating that faith can neither be erased nor subdued.

In a detailed blog post, PM Modi highlighted the significance of Somnath as a reflection of India’s consciousness. He also shared this message on the social media platform X, writing, “Jai Somnath! In 2026, we mark 1000 years since the first attack on our sacred Somnath Jyotirling. Despite repeated assaults, our Somnath temple remains steadfast! Somnath truly tells the story of the pride and indomitable courage of millions of brave sons of Mother India, for whom culture and civilisation have always been supreme.”

Located in Prabhas Patan, Gujarat, Somnath holds a prominent place among the twelve Jyotirlingas. Scriptures say that visiting this temple leads to liberation from sins and spiritual peace. This spiritual and social significance has made it a target for foreign invasions time and again. The attack by Mahmud of Ghazni in January 1026 left deep scars but could not extinguish India’s spirit.

PM Modi’s blog explains that the story of Somnath is not just about destruction but about a millennium of struggle, sacrifice, and rebuilding. The temple today sends a message to the world. Even after one thousand years since the first attack, Somnath stands firm, inspiring us that if a broken temple can rise again, then India too can reclaim its ancient glory and lead the world.
