Skin Issues in Heat: Recognize Symptoms and Prevent Problems

New Delhi, June 1: The scorching heat is currently affecting many parts of the country. Rising temperatures and hot winds are causing various health issues for people. The intense sun combined with humid air is troubling many. During such weather, skin-related problems become quite common. Health experts warn against ignoring skin issues in the heat.

According to the National Health Mission (NHM), excessive heat and sweating can lead to minor skin irritations. If not addressed promptly, these can escalate into serious problems. Increased sweating during summer can cause sweat to get trapped in skin folds or clogged pores, leading to inflammation and irritation. This condition is commonly known as heat rash or prickly heat. It particularly affects children, overweight individuals, and those who sweat excessively.

Key symptoms of heat rash include small red bumps or blisters on the skin, intense itching, and a prickling sensation. Areas like the neck, chest, waist, armpits, and skin folds are often more affected. In some cases, mild fever or burning sensations may also occur.

The NHM has suggested some easy measures for skin care during the summer. Staying in cool, low-humidity environments is crucial. Spend more time in areas with fans or air conditioning. Always keep affected skin clean and dry. After bathing, ensure to dry the body thoroughly. You can use plain talcum powder for comfort, but avoid those with strong fragrances or chemicals. Do not apply creams or ointments on affected areas without consulting a doctor, as this may worsen the condition. Additionally, wear loose, cotton clothing that allows airflow. Use an umbrella or scarf when going outside.

Experts recommend taking certain precautions. Avoid prolonged sun exposure, drink at least 8-10 glasses of water daily, and steer clear of oily or heavy foods. Pay special attention to children’s skin.

Health specialists state that while summer poses challenges for skin health, a little caution and proper care can help prevent these issues. Do not ignore early symptoms. If rashes worsen, if there is a high fever, or if signs of infection appear, contact a doctor immediately.
