New Delhi, 9 December. Many people suffer from sleep disorders characterized by difficulty falling asleep, frequent waking during the night, and irritability upon waking. Ayurveda offers some easy home remedies to relieve these symptoms.
According to Ayurveda, the main causes of insomnia are increased Vata dosha, weak digestive fire, and mental stress. Modern science also points to factors like blue light from mobile phones, irregular daily routines, and stress, which reduce the hormone melatonin and cause sleep problems.
Ayurveda suggests that performing small simple activities before bedtime can help achieve deep and peaceful sleep. These remedies are supported by both Ayurvedic knowledge and modern scientific understanding.
At least one hour before sleeping, completely calm your mind. Keep phones, TVs, and laptops away. Practice deep and slow breathing for 4-5 minutes. If worries keep your mind busy, write them down on paper and set it aside. This lightens the mind and helps induce sleep. Ayurveda states that a peaceful mind is the first gateway to good sleep.
Massage your feet lightly or drink lukewarm water. Before going to bed, massage the soles of your feet for 5-7 minutes with desi ghee, sesame oil, or coconut oil. This calms the nerves. If massage is not preferred, simply drinking a glass of lukewarm water can soothe digestion and relax the body.
Drinking warm beverages before bedtime is beneficial. About 30-40 minutes before sleep, have warm turmeric milk, ashwagandha or brahmi milk, or tulsi-ginger herbal tea. These drinks reduce stress and prepare the body for deep sleep.
Also, keep the bedroom lighting dim and adjust the temperature according to the season. Using a mild fragrance of lavender or sandalwood before sleeping can also help.
Regularly following these Ayurvedic tips can improve sleep quality, resulting in freshness in the morning and sustained energy throughout the day. However, if insomnia persists for a long time, consulting a doctor is recommended.
