Sikkim Government Forms Committee to Investigate Death of Woman and Unborn Twins

Gangtok, May 8: The Sikkim government has established a five-member investigative committee to examine the deaths of a woman and her unborn twins following treatment at STNM Hospital. Officials announced this decision on Friday.

The deceased, Shweta Karki, was a resident of the Gyalsing district. She passed away after being referred to the hospital for better medical care.

Her husband, Swaroop Chhetri, has accused the hospital of medical negligence and claims that the deaths of his wife and their unborn twins were due to improper medical management.

This incident has raised significant concern among the public in the state, prompting the government to order a formal investigation into the matter.

According to officials, the committee has been tasked with investigating the entire sequence of events from the patient’s admission to the hospital until her referral to another medical center.

The committee will review the treatment provided to the patient and the clinical management to determine whether the medical staff adhered to established obstetric and gynecological protocols.

Officials stated that the investigation will also assess the causes of death for the unborn twins and Shweta Karki after her referral.

The committee has been instructed to identify any procedural flaws, lapses in patient care, or negligence during the treatment process.

The state government has directed the committee to submit its investigation report and recommendations to the competent authority within one week.

The investigative committee comprises senior officials and medical experts.

Officials emphasized that the government is taking this matter seriously and has initiated the investigation to ensure accountability and uncover the precise circumstances surrounding the deaths.
