Shravathi Project Crucial for Karnatakas Energy Needs: CM Shivakumar

Bengaluru, July 20: Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced on Monday that the Shravathi Pump Storage Project is vital for meeting the state’s future electricity requirements. He assured that the government will ensure its implementation.

Shivakumar made these remarks during the inauguration of the 57th foundation day ceremony of Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) at the Jnana Jyoti Auditorium in Bengaluru City University.

He noted that the foundation for the Shravathi Pump Storage Project was laid long ago, but it could not be realized at that time. Efforts are now underway to implement it, with necessary legal approvals being obtained. Despite some objections, he emphasized that the government will not back down from this crucial project for the state.

Recalling a similar experience, the Chief Minister mentioned the opposition faced when KPCL proposed a gas-based power plant in Yelahanka. However, the project was implemented in the state’s interest and is now successfully generating electricity.

Regarding the Pavagada Solar Park, Shivakumar highlighted that instead of purchasing land from farmers, they were made stakeholders in the project, setting a precedent for the entire country. The park currently produces 2,000 megawatts of electricity, and local farmers are now willing to provide 10,000 acres of land for its expansion, which will commence soon.

The state government is providing free electricity to 1.61 crore families under the Griha Jyoti scheme, with KPCL playing a significant role in its success. The government spends approximately ₹10,000 crore annually on this initiative.

Additionally, it offers a subsidy of ₹20,000 crore per year for free electricity to agricultural pump sets. The Chief Minister stated that these two initiatives have resulted in savings of nearly ₹30,000 crore for the people of the state.

Calling for collective contributions to Karnataka’s progress, Shivakumar urged KPCL employees to take pride in being part of “Team Karnataka” and to work together for the state’s development and prosperity.
