Mumbai, May 10: Renowned actor and television host Shekhar Suman has interviewed many prominent figures in politics and film throughout his long career. Recently, he shared some intriguing anecdotes from his past, including a memorable meeting with Phoolan Devi, who transitioned from a bandit to a politician.
Suman recalled, “I have never felt fear or anxiety while interviewing anyone. I always ask questions with confidence. However, when Phoolan Devi sat across from me for an interview, I noticed something interesting. She was so petite that her feet didn’t touch the ground while sitting in the chair.”
He continued, “Seeing this, I jokingly asked her how she managed to ride a horse and wield a gun when her feet couldn’t reach the ground. After all, you are the ‘Bandit Queen.'”
Suman shared that Phoolan Devi looked at him for a moment before he pressed on with another direct question. He asked, “Having shot so many people and lived such a dangerous life, have you ever been afraid of anyone?”
“Phoolan Devi responded humorously, saying, ‘I am afraid of you because you shoot questions like bullets,'” Suman recounted, adding that everyone present burst into laughter. This moment became a cherished memory for him.
In the same conversation, Suman also shared an interesting experience with the late Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray. He recounted, “Once, Bal Thackeray personally called me to praise my show. I seized the opportunity and immediately asked him for an interview.”
He explained, “After the interview, Bal Thackeray said he enjoyed our conversation and suggested we should do another interview. I jokingly replied that I didn’t have any other clothes to wear. Thackeray responded that we could do the next interview in the same outfit. This moment is also one of the most memorable of my life.”
