Bihar Politics Heats Up as Independent MLAs Join BJP Support
The political landscape in Bihar shifts as independent MLAs join BJP, raising questions about coalition integrity and voter trust.

Patna, November 1 (Daily Kiran) : The political climate in Bihar is intensifying following the victories of independent candidates Rahul Raj and Banshidhar Brajwasi in the recent Legislative Council elections. Both candidates received support from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), prompting criticism from Anand Pushkar, the Janata Dal (United) candidate backed by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Pushkar has raised concerns regarding the role of certain BJP leaders, while Rohini Acharya, daughter of RJD president Lalu Yadav, labeled the situation a betrayal of the electorate’s mandate.
In the recent elections for eight seats in the Bihar Legislative Council, Rahul Raj triumphed over NDA-supported candidate Anand Pushkar in the Saran teachers’ constituency. Similarly, Banshidhar Brajwasi defeated NDA candidate Abhishek Jha in the Tirhut graduate constituency. Both newly elected members attended a meeting of the legislative party at the BJP office, where state party president Sanjay Sarawagi welcomed them and honored them with BJP scarves in the presence of Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary.
Following the meeting, Pushkar took to social media to accuse some BJP leaders of failing to uphold coalition principles. He questioned the involvement of MPs Rajiv Pratap Rudy and Radha Mohan Singh, noting that while they highlight developmental achievements under Chief Minister Nitish Kumar during elections, they seem to disregard coalition ethics when it comes to supporting allied candidates.
Pushkar emphasized his long-standing dedication to the JD(U) and highlighted the contributions of his father, Kedarnath Pandey, to the teaching community. He urged critics to consider the facts before questioning his political history and organizational commitment. Pushkar claimed he was assured that the current member would be prevented from contesting, yet that individual ultimately entered the race as an independent.
He expressed concerns that bringing him into the BJP could mislead coalition partners. Pushkar also pointed out that during an NDA meeting, a strategy was devised to garner support among teachers, but many BJP MPs and MLAs failed to engage actively. He stated that this issue transcends his election, emphasizing the respect owed to dedicated workers within the coalition.
In response, Rohini Acharya took to social media, stating, “A dagger in the back of the mandate, a transaction of democracy for self-interest.” She argued that voters elected independent candidates, but their subsequent alignment with the BJP represents a direct betrayal of that mandate. Acharya accused these leaders of prioritizing personal and political gains above the electorate’s trust. This development has sparked a fresh political debate about coordination and coalition ethics within the NDA in Bihar.
