Dakar, November 1 (Daily Kiran) : The Youth Olympic Games 2026 have officially commenced in Dakar, Senegal, marked by a vibrant opening ceremony. Senegal’s President, Macky Sall, declared the games open, celebrating a historic moment as this is the first Olympic event to be held in Africa.
Hundreds of young athletes from various countries paraded at the Stade Abdoulaye Wade, representing their nations. The ceremony highlighted Senegal’s tradition of hospitality, known as “teranga,” through a performance that connected Africa’s past, present, and future. The event featured three symbolic characters—Alkebulan, Keb, and Sito—illustrating the transfer of cultural heritage across generations and emphasizing the role of youth in shaping the continent’s future.
Christina Coventry, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), praised the significance of the evening. She expressed her pride in Africa and her excitement to showcase it to the world. “Standing here tonight fills me with pride as a Zimbabwean and an African woman. Our continent is welcoming the Olympic movement for the first time,” she remarked.
Coventry encouraged the athletes, stating, “I hope these games instill confidence in you to believe in yourselves and dream big. Give it your all.”
The games will take place from October 31 to November 13 across Dakar, Saly, and Diamniadio, featuring 25 sports with 2,655 young athletes from 205 delegations. India has sent a 17-member team, comprising 11 women and six men, competing in 11 sports.
