New Delhi, April 6: Sharad Pawar, the president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), announced on Monday that the Pawar family has decided not to contest the Baramati by-election in mourning for the untimely demise of Ajit Pawar. However, he refrained from criticizing the Congress’s decision to participate in the election.
Speaking to reporters after taking oath as a Rajya Sabha member in Delhi, Pawar stated that the Congress party has the right to field candidates in Baramati.
When asked about his grandson Parth Pawar’s claim that the Congress’s decision to contest the by-election marks the beginning of its decline, Sharad Pawar expressed uncertainty about Parth’s political maturity to comment on the Congress party.
He emphasized that it is the Congress party’s privilege to nominate a candidate in Baramati, likely based on the current circumstances. Although they are part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance, such issues occasionally arise in specific constituencies and are not of national significance.
In response to Parth Pawar’s criticism, Sharad Pawar highlighted the need for maturity when making political statements. The seasoned leader remarked, “I am not sure if he (Parth Pawar) possesses that level of political maturity.”
Following the vacancy left by Ajit Pawar’s passing, Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar filed her nomination for the Baramati by-election on Monday. The NCP did not field a candidate, while the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi member, Congress, has entered the electoral fray.
Sharad Pawar stated, “Anyone contesting an election must accept that there will be opponents. We decided not to field a candidate. Many people contest elections, but as a family, we are saddened by Ajit Pawar’s untimely demise. As the head of the family, it is my responsibility. Hence, we decided not to contest this election.”
