Shankaracharya Avimukteshwaranand Criticises Government, Calls Actions ‘Demonic’

Varanasi: The ongoing dispute between the administration and Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand in Prayagraj has escalated further. In a recent statement, the Shankaracharya sharply criticised the government, saying, “The deeds here belong to demons, while the robes are worn by saints.”

Speaking to the media, he emphasised that true saints cannot be divided. Those who appear as saints but wear disguises are impostors, distinct from genuine saints. He condemned the violence in Prayagraj, noting that the baton charge was not only aimed at authentic saints but also at students attending gurukuls, sannyasis, brahmacharis, female ascetics, and elderly people—all integral to Sanatan Dharma. He said those unaffected by these actions are not true saints but pretenders.

The Shankaracharya accused the government of holding an anti-Brahmin stance. He pointed out that previously, attacks did not target women and children, but now Brahmin children are also being targeted. He criticised the authorities for failing to take action against any officials following these incidents, indicating a biased approach against Brahmins.

He added that whether an apology is issued or wrongdoing admitted rests with the administration. Saints exercised restraint for eleven days, allowing the government a chance to correct its mistakes, but no such effort was made. The public witnessed clear evidence through videos and photographs showing people being beaten, insulted by having their hair pulled, yet no accountability followed. With the Magh period now over and saints having left, the arrogance displayed by the authorities remains evident for all to see.

Addressing the destruction of temples and idols, the Shankaracharya compared these acts in Varanasi and other places to those during Aurangzeb’s rule. He expressed concern over some saints’ anger at being compared to Aurangzeb, stating that attachment to temples, idols, and deities should naturally cause pain when they are harmed, regardless of political affiliations.

He also responded to a minister’s use of the term ‘Kalanemi’ to insult him, challenging the minister to provide proof if such claims exist. Criticising the government further, he remarked that some individuals dressed as saints carry out demonic deeds. He highlighted attacks on Brahmins, damage to cows, temples, and idols, calling these actions the work of demons, while saints are the protectors of religion and society.

The Shankaracharya condemned the government’s steps against saints as contrary to the principles of Parliament and democracy. He accused the administration of attempting to divide the Hindu community by creating rifts among saints.

He concluded by noting that these developments have weakened public and saintly trust. People are beginning to question the justice and democratic values in the country. The authoritarian approach of the administration has worsened the situation, violating the rights of saints and citizens alike, with no intention of investigation or accountability.
