New Delhi, April 14: A significant new textbook related to pediatric medicine was released on Tuesday. The second edition of “Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition” is designed for postgraduate courses. Edited by Professor Anupam Sibal and Dr. Sarath Gopalan, it features a foreword by Professor Kathleen B. Schwartz from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
This updated edition includes the latest advancements in the field, expanding to 45 chapters that cover several new topics. It provides detailed information on critical areas such as inflammatory bowel disease, neuro-gastroenterology, celiac disease, and allergies to cow’s milk protein. Additionally, it explores the role of genetics in gastrointestinal and liver diseases, along with emerging fields like endoscopy and liver transplantation.
Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh launched the second edition of this textbook. According to the book, approximately 30% of children visiting pediatricians suffer from digestive and liver disorders. This statistic underscores the need for updated knowledge and specialized training in this field.
The textbook serves as a comprehensive resource for pediatricians, trainees in pediatric gastroenterology, and practicing specialists. During the launch, the minister noted that once a solid clinical foundation is established, AI can serve as a valuable assistant, collaborator, and facilitator.
Dr. Singh highlighted the rapid expansion of medical knowledge, pointing out a significant increase in research and publication rates. This surge necessitates a focus on conceptual clarity and fundamental clinical training in medical education.
He emphasized that while new technologies have made access to information easier, the learning process must be grounded in a solid understanding and practical clinical experience. He also stressed the importance of continuously updating medical education systems to address emerging challenges, including the integration of technology and the growing complexity of diseases.
Dr. Singh encouraged young professionals in the medical field to develop strong foundational knowledge and gradually specialize in their chosen areas. According to the Ministry of Science and Technology, the course was edited by Professor Anupam Sibal, Group Medical Director of Apollo Hospitals and a senior pediatric and liver specialist, along with Dr. Sarath Gopalan, a consultant pediatrician and liver specialist at Madhukar Rainbow Children’s Hospital in Delhi.
Co-editor Dr. Mohammad Ishaq Malik is an associate professor and pediatrician at Government Medical College in Srinagar. The foreword was written by Professor Kathleen B. Schwartz from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. The first edition of the textbook was published in 2016 and was launched by the then Union Health Minister. The current edition builds upon that foundation, incorporating the latest scientific developments and clinical practices in the field.
