Shahzad Poonawala Criticizes Opposition for Spreading Confusion During COVID-19

New Delhi, March 13: BJP leader Shahzad Poonawala addressed the issue of fuel supply, stating that the government has not only increased strategic reserves but also promoted alternative uses of petrol and diesel domestically.

He remarked, “Today’s India is not like 2012-13, when fuel shortages forced petrol pumps to close by 8 PM.” He sarcastically noted that while we heard about curfews during riots, the UPA government led the country into a ‘petrol curfew.’ At that time, only 20-30% of the population had LPG connections, and despite the lack of full coverage, long queues for gas were common.

Poonawala emphasized that India’s current oil supply situation is significantly improved. “We have established a strategic reserve of nearly 4,000 crore liters, sufficient for seven to eight weeks of needs. India is no longer reliant on just 10-15 countries; we now import crude oil from 40 nations. Over 70% of our crude oil comes from the ‘non-Hormuz’ region, which is safe from war-affected areas. We have not only focused on strategic petroleum but also reduced domestic consumption of petrol and diesel.”

He further explained that while gas cannot be stored, the domestic production capacity has increased by 28% to ensure a steady gas supply. Most of the gas used in India is produced domestically, and measures have been taken to secure any necessary imports. There are no cuts in domestic supply, CNG, or for hospitals. Commercial and industrial establishments are receiving 80% of the gas supply. He added that additional gas is being sourced from various locations.

Poonawala criticized the opposition, questioning why they continue to spread confusion when the situation is stable. “They want chaos, confusion among the people, and for citizens to take to the streets. They did this during COVID-19 and are still trying today.”
