Mumbai, March 13: Renowned actor and model Milind Soman recently reminisced about his acting journey, particularly his experiences in Tamil cinema. He expressed his frustration with being typecast in similar roles.
Milind shared that he became bored with playing the same villainous characters in Tamil films 15 to 17 years ago. He recalled, “My first Tamil project was about 15-17 years ago. The film was titled ‘Pachaiyiki Deva Kicharam’ (or ‘Pachakili Muthucharam’), directed by Gautham Menon. It was a great film, and I played the role of a villain. After that, I did 3-4 more Tamil films, but I kept getting cast as the same type of villain. I got tired of portraying the same negative character.”
He decided to take a stand against such roles, stating that he would only accept offers for good characters, regardless of whether they were a cook, gardener, secretary, or grandfather. He turned down numerous offers for about 7-8 years in Tamil, Telugu, and other languages.
In 2021, he finally took on a positive role in the Tamil film “Doctor.” He mentioned that he was prepared for such roles by then. “The perspective on stories and characters in Tamil cinema is very different and special,” he noted.
Praising the film, he said, “The structure and flow of the story were quite unique. They wanted me to play a character that was mysterious and had gray shades. He wasn’t purely a villain, nor was he a good person, as he lived in a bad world. The relationship between Vijay Sethupathi and my character, Sevethan and Muthu, is very significant in the story.”
Milind also spoke about his wife, Ankita, saying, “She feels very secure with me because we have been together for 13 years, and we have been married for 8 years now. If she felt insecure, she probably wouldn’t have married me. Once, we were on a plane, and I was reading a script. After reading the first scene, I exclaimed, ‘Oh!’ and handed it to her. She said, ‘It’s great; you should definitely do it.’”
