Tangail, October 3 (Daily Kiran) : In Tangail, Bangladesh, seven idols intended for the upcoming Durga Puja were vandalized at a local temple. This incident has raised alarm amid increasing concerns over attacks on Hindu religious sites in the country.
The damage occurred between Wednesday night and Thursday morning at the temple located in the Jamurki West Para area of Mirzapur upazila. Local authorities reported that preparations for the festival were underway, and the idols were nearly complete, with only painting left to be done.
Prakash Bakali, president of the Jamurki Arya Samiti, stated that he and others left the temple around 10 PM on Wednesday. Upon returning Thursday morning, they discovered the idols had been broken. “We do not know who did this. We have lodged a formal complaint with the police and demand that law enforcement identify those responsible and bring them to justice,” he said.
Adnan Mustafiz, the assistant police superintendent of Tangail, confirmed that some of the idols were partially damaged. He assured that an investigation is ongoing to identify the culprits, and necessary security measures have been implemented.
This incident is part of a broader context of rising concerns regarding attacks on Hindu temples and minority communities in Bangladesh. Reports indicate that last month, several religious items, including a statue of Goddess Kali, were stolen from a temple in Faridpur city.
The Awami League party recently referenced the period from 2001 to 2006, alleging that similar conditions affecting minority communities are resurfacing. They accused opposition groups of orchestrating attacks on temples, arson, land grabbing, violence against women, and forcing Hindus to leave the country. These claims have not been independently verified.
As the community prepares for Durga Puja, the incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by religious minorities in Bangladesh.
