New Delhi, April 22: A special court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has sentenced seven individuals, including mastermind T. Nasir, a member of Lashkar-e-Taiba, in connection with the 2023 Bengaluru jail radicalization case.
The court imposed a seven-year rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of ₹48,000 on Nasir and co-accused Syed Suhail Khan, Mohammad Umar, Zahid Tabrez, Syed Mudassir Pasha, Mohammad Faisal Rabbani, and Salman Khan.
All accused had previously admitted to the charges filed by the NIA. This case revolves around a terrorist conspiracy linked to Lashkar, orchestrated by T. Nasir inside the Parappana Agrahara Central Jail. The plot involved identifying, recruiting, training, converting, and radicalizing naive youths within the prison to carry out terrorist activities in India.
The investigation began in July 2023 when the Bengaluru Central Crime Branch (CCB) seized weapons, ammunition, and digital devices from habitual offenders. These criminals had planned to execute terrorist attacks in Bengaluru to further the violent agenda of the banned terrorist organization Lashkar.
The NIA took over the case, uncovering a larger conspiracy aimed at facilitating T. Nasir’s escape while being transported from jail to court. At that time, Nasir was serving a life sentence for his involvement in the 2008 Bengaluru serial blasts.
Following a thorough investigation, the NIA filed charges against 11 arrested individuals and one absconding suspect, identified as Junaid Ahmed. Salman Khan was apprehended after being successfully extradited from the Republic of Rwanda, thanks to coordinated efforts between the NIA and Rwandan authorities. Efforts to locate and arrest Junaid Ahmed are ongoing.
