Manipur Launches Hinchi Project to Combat Drug Abuse and Support Farmers

Imphal, April 21: The Manipur Police have initiated a commendable effort to curb illegal drug trade and opium cultivation. In collaboration with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), they launched a community project named ‘Hinchi’ in Churachandpur district. This announcement was made via a post on the social media platform X on Tuesday.

According to the Manipur Police, ‘Hinchi’ translates to ‘seeds of life,’ symbolizing hope and new beginnings.

The police identified three sensitive areas in the district where illegal opium farming was suspected. They engaged in continuous dialogue and awareness campaigns, involving village heads and 127 families. The initiative encourages them to abandon illegal farming and adopt legitimate and sustainable livelihoods.

The project received financial support of ₹2.8 million from Segula Technologies under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). With this collaboration, the Manipur Police provided farmers with essential resources for alternative farming. Beneficiaries received approximately 55,000 kilograms of ginger seeds, 450 kilograms of pea seeds, and 6,500 banana plants.

Looking ahead, joint teams from the Manipur Police, NCB, and local NGO NARPS will conduct regular monitoring. This aims to maintain transparency in the project, provide ongoing guidance to farmers, and assist in connecting them to markets post-harvest.

The ‘Hinchi’ initiative stands as a strong example of collective effort, transforming risks into opportunities and guiding farmers towards self-reliance. This initiative will not only help curb illegal drug trade but also pave the way for safe and sustainable development in the region.
