Senegal’s head coach Pape Thiaw addressed the reasons behind Nicolas Jackson’s absence during the quarter-final match against Mali in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Speaking after Senegal secured their place in the semi-finals, Thiaw emphasized that Jackson’s omission was purely a tactical decision and not due to any disciplinary action.
In the crucial clash against the Mali Eagles, Habib Diallo started as the striker instead of Bayern Munich forward Nicolas Jackson. Diallo played the entire first half before being substituted in the second half by Chérif Ndiaye. Jackson, who had been expected to feature, did not get any playing time, which raised questions among fans and analysts.
Speculation grew following Jackson’s visible disappointment after being substituted in the previous round of 16 match against Sudan, where he failed to score. However, Coach Thiaw was quick to dismiss any rumours of discord between the player and the team management.
“It was not at all a punishment to leave him on the bench,” Thiaw clarified. “It was a coach’s choice. He was disappointed when he was subbed off, and that’s normal because no striker likes to be replaced without scoring. He’s someone who can bring us a lot in the future and help us win.”
This explanation highlights the coach’s confidence in Jackson’s abilities and his role in Senegal’s plans moving forward in the tournament.
