Imphal, March 26: Security operations in Manipur have intensified following armed attacks by suspected Kuki militants in the Bishnupur district. On Thursday, the militants targeted an Indian Army post in the Fouljang and Gothol areas. In response, security forces have continued their joint operations against the insurgents.
A police officer from Imphal reported that the militants opened fire at the Indian Army post located in the Phougakchao Awang Laikai area. He stated, “The Indian Army and the Central Reserve Police Force (58th Battalion) stationed in the area responded immediately, leading to a gunfight that lasted about 30 minutes late Wednesday night.”
Since early Thursday, the Indian Army, CRPF, Manipur Police, and Manipur Armed Force (Indian Reserve Battalion) have launched a joint operation in the region and surrounding hilly areas where the shooting occurred.
The officer added, “The situation is being monitored continuously, and security forces will maintain operations in the nearby hilly regions.” The Manipur Police have urged citizens to avoid spreading rumors and to verify any information before sharing it.
In a separate development, security forces destroyed six illegally constructed bunkers in the Litang and Mongkat Chepu Upper village areas of Ukhrul district as part of an ongoing operation that began on Wednesday. Following the operation, most bunkers in the violence-affected Litang area have been neutralized. The authorities reported that security forces are on high alert and strategically deployed to prevent any escalation of violence in the region.
Meanwhile, security forces arrested an active member of the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) from the Patsoi area in Imphal West district. The arrested militant was identified as Asem Subhash Meitei, also known as Lingzelkhomba (30), and a mobile phone was recovered from him.
In another major operation, security forces apprehended 14 UNLF (Koireing faction) militants from the Haokhong area of Thoubal district on Sunday (March 22). A significant amount of equipment was seized, including two INSAS rifles, 13 magazines of various weapons, 100 rounds of INSAS ammunition, one lakh rupees in cash, 12 mobile phones, five helmets, five backpacks, and four vehicles.
Joint teams of central and state forces are conducting extensive operations against militant activities across the state. Search and area control operations are ongoing in sensitive, mixed-population, and border areas of several districts.
A total of 113 checkpoints have been established throughout Manipur in the valley and hilly districts to monitor the movement of suspicious individuals and vehicles. Additionally, vehicles transporting essential goods, including trucks on the Imphal-Jiribam National Highway (NH-37), are being provided with security escorts.
Strict security arrangements and convoy protection measures are in place to ensure safe movement in sensitive areas. The Manipur Police have once again appealed to the public not to believe in rumors and to avoid being misled by fake videos circulating on social media.
