Mumbai, April 18: Severe weather is currently affecting Jammu and Kashmir, causing significant disruptions. In light of heavy rainfall and snowfall, schools in Kishtwar district have been ordered to close.
The Chief Education Officer issued a directive stating that the adverse weather conditions pose serious risks to students and staff, including slippery roads and the potential for landslides. Following the district administration’s guidelines, all government and private schools in Kishtwar will remain closed on Saturday. However, schools in the Kishtwar city area (from Malipath to Cherhar) will remain open only for classes 6 and above.
On Friday, the weather in the district fluctuated throughout the day. Due to the ongoing severe conditions and potential hazards, the Kishtwar-Anantnag road was temporarily closed. This route had recently been reopened for two days up to Sinthan but was shut down again due to concerns over rain and landslides. The administration emphasized that this decision prioritizes the safety of travelers to prevent accidents. The ongoing light rain in the hilly areas has led to a drop in temperatures, prompting residents to rely on warm clothing. Market activity has also decreased compared to normal days.
The Jammu and Kashmir Meteorological Department has forecasted continued adverse weather conditions until April 19. Light to moderate rain is expected in the plains, while snowfall is likely in the hilly regions. Thunderstorms, landslides, and avalanches are also anticipated in higher altitudes, with strong winds reaching speeds of 40-50 km/h and potential hail in some areas.
