Satwik-Chirags Journey Ends Early at Indonesia Open Due to Injury

Jakarta, June 3: The star Indian badminton duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty has been eliminated in the first round of the Indonesia Open. Satwik had to withdraw due to a shoulder injury and will not participate further in the tournament. Consequently, Chirag and Satwik have officially pulled out of the Indonesia Open.

During their match against the Malaysian pair of Kang Khai Jing and Aaron Tai, Satwik indicated discomfort in his right shoulder while trailing 6-11 in the first game. His condition was serious, leading to a walkover for the opposing team.

The Badminton Association of India released a statement saying, “Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty have withdrawn from the Indonesia Open 2026 due to injury. The duo will now focus on recovery and rehabilitation to prepare for upcoming essential tournaments. We wish Satwik a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing both back on the court soon.”

Satwik’s recurring shoulder issues had previously caused the pair to withdraw from the Badminton Asia Championships earlier this year.

Last week, the Indian duo made a remarkable comeback after losing a game to defeat the Indonesian pair of Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri, winning 18-21, 21-17, 21-16, and becoming the first Indian men’s pair to win the Singapore Open.

In other matches, Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Gadde had a strong start in the BWF Super 1000 event, defeating the world number 20 Taipei pair of Yang Po-Hsuan and Hu Ling Fang to secure their place in the next round.

On Tuesday, world number 10 Lakshya Sen was eliminated after losing his first-round match to Indonesia’s Alvi Farhan. In men’s doubles, the Indian pair of Hariharan Amsakaran and M.R. Arjun defeated Malaysia’s Tan Wee Kiong, a silver medalist in men’s doubles at the Rio 2016 Olympics, and Noor Muhammad Azrin Ayub in the opening round.
