Samresh Jung: Indias Goldfinger Making Waves in International Shooting

New Delhi, May 4: Samresh Jung, a renowned Indian shooter, is famously known as ‘Goldfinger’ in the shooting world. He made headlines during the 2006 Commonwealth Games, where he secured an impressive tally of 5 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze medal. Honored with the ‘Arjuna Award’ in 2002, Jung has brought numerous memorable victories to India on the international stage and has also contributed to coaching.

Born on May 5, 1970, in Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh, Samresh comes from a family of distinguished shooters. His grandfather, Sher Jung, was a freedom fighter and an excellent marksman, while his father served as a Colonel in the army. Following in their footsteps, Samresh chose to serve his country by joining the CISF.

In 1997, Jung made his mark at the SAF Games, winning 2 gold and 1 silver medal. At the 2002 Commonwealth Games held in Manchester, he claimed 2 gold and 3 silver medals, earning him the prestigious ‘Arjuna Award’ that same year. Four years later, at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, he achieved an outstanding performance, winning 5 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze medal, and was named ‘Best Athlete,’ becoming the first Indian to receive this honor.

In the 2004 SAF Games, he won a silver medal in the 25-meter standard pistol event. In 2005, he added to his accolades with 2 gold medals, 2 silver, and 1 bronze at the Commonwealth Shooting Championship.

Jung represented India at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, competing in the 10-meter air pistol and 50-meter pistol events, but unfortunately did not reach the finals in either. He had the honor of carrying the ‘Queen’s Baton’ during the opening ceremony of the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, where he also secured a bronze medal in the 25-meter standard pistol event.
