Mumbai, March 24: The Maharashtra government’s decision to implement the “Religious Freedom Act” has been welcomed by saints and the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), who describe it as a significant and visionary step. Jagatguru Suryaacharya Krishnadevanand Giri Maharaj, Swami Shri Bhartanand Saraswati Maharaj, and the VHP expressed their gratitude and congratulations to the government for this decision.
In a conversation, Jagatguru Suryaacharya Maharaj stated that this law should have been enacted much earlier. He noted that over the past 15 years, a large number of people have converted their religion, a trend that could have been prevented in a timely manner. He emphasized that as followers of Sanatan Dharma, they will continue to promote this tradition and raise awareness in society.
Swami Shri Bhartanand Saraswati Maharaj labeled the Maharashtra government’s decision as historic and revolutionary. He mentioned that had this law been implemented sooner, it could have saved many tribal and impoverished individuals from forced conversions. According to him, the enactment of this law will make it difficult to lure vulnerable groups into changing their religion.
He further stated that while the government has taken an important step, its success will depend on how effectively the police and administration enforce it. He stressed that laws are often created but not properly enforced, urging the administration to exercise special vigilance in this regard.
Saints and organizations expressed hope that this act will help maintain balance and religious freedom in society. The “Maharashtra Religious Freedom Act, 2026” aims to prevent forced, fraudulent, or inducement-based conversions through marriage. Under this law, a 60-day notice is mandatory before any conversion, with penalties for violators including up to seven years in prison and fines ranging from 100,000 to 500,000 rupees.
