Melbourne: World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka secured a straight-sets victory against Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina, winning 6-2, 6-3, to reach her fourth consecutive Australian Open final in the women’s singles semifinal on Thursday.
Sabalenka will face the winner of the match between Elina Rybakina and Jessica Pegula on Saturday for the championship title in Melbourne. The Belarusian had lost the 2023 final to Madison Keys and is now eager to reclaim the crown.
The match, played at Rod Laver Arena, saw Sabalenka dominate from the start. She took just under an hour to seal the win, maintaining strong control throughout. Sabalenka won 67 percent of points on her first serve and 79 percent on her second, showcasing powerful serving and consistent pressure on Svitolina.
Two-time Australian Open champion Svitolina, aiming for her third title, struggled to find a foothold and was unable to mount a comeback against Sabalenka’s relentless pace and accuracy. The Ukrainian player managed only 56 percent and 50 percent points on her first and second serves respectively, committing three double faults during the match.
Sabalenka converted four of her seven break-point opportunities, while Svitolina managed just one break from four chances. In total points, Sabalenka outscored her opponent 65 to 46, underlining her commanding performance.
