Chennai, March 15: Rural postal workers are not just the last link in governance; they are the first. Their crucial role in delivering government services to villages was emphasized by Union Minister of State for Communications, Chandrasekhar Pemmassani, during a rural postal workers’ conference in Tamil Nadu’s capital on Sunday.
Pemmassani stated that without rural postal workers, government services would fail to reach rural areas. He referred to them as the “heartbeat of rural India.”
“You are not the last link in governance; you are the first. Without you, government services cannot reach villages,” he said.
The minister highlighted the extensive services provided by postal workers, from delivering letters and parcels to offering banking services, Aadhaar, and passport-related assistance. They ensure that services reach every village, street, and home.
Despite adverse weather conditions, these workers remain a bridge of trust between the government and citizens.
Discussing the growth of the logistics sector, Pemmassani noted that India Post has a significant opportunity to enhance its presence in the e-commerce market.
Currently, India Post earns less than ₹1,000 crore from parcel services, while a private courier company generates around ₹6,000 crore.
For decades, India Post has been the backbone of communication in the country, delivering legal documents, money orders, newspapers, and books.
In many villages, postal workers also assist people with reading and writing letters, serving as a reliable link between rural communities and the outside world.
He stressed that India boasts one of the largest postal networks globally, employing nearly 400,000 regular staff and over 250,000 rural postal workers across more than 160,000 post offices.
Pemmassani also mentioned that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister of Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia, the government is working to transform the postal department into a modern, technology-driven logistics organization.
