Rory McIlroy to Honor Tiger Woods at Masters Dinner Following Recent Arrest

New Delhi, April 7: Rory McIlroy is set to celebrate his Masters victory at the annual dinner, where he plans to honor Tiger Woods. This comes less than two weeks after Woods’ DUI arrest and crash in Florida.

The Northern Irish golfer expressed his excitement for the special event on Tuesday, April 7. He emphasized that both Woods and Phil Mickelson, who has withdrawn from the tournament due to a family health issue, will be recognized as “two of the greatest champions” in the tournament’s history.

“Unfortunately, there will be a couple of guys that won’t be in that room, which is a shame, but I want to make sure that they’re acknowledged as well,” McIlroy, 36, stated. “They’ve been two of the greatest champions that the Masters has ever seen. But it’s going to be a really cool night. I can’t wait. I hope everyone enjoys the dinner and everything that I’ve selected.”

Woods, 50, is currently seeking treatment following his arrest on March 27. Authorities reported finding two hydrocodone tablets in his pants pocket after he crashed his SUV. They noted several signs of impairment, including “bloodshot and glassy” eyes and “extremely dilated” pupils, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by PEOPLE.

In bodycam footage released by PEOPLE, the five-time Masters champion told officers at the scene in Jupiter Island, Florida, that he was “hoping to” participate in the Masters, depending on the situation.

Earlier this week, Woods made his return to competitive golf for the first time since June 2024, participating in the TGL finals virtual golf league. He underwent his seventh back surgery last October and suffered an Achilles rupture last spring, just before the Masters.

Mickelson, 55, announced his withdrawal from the tournament last week due to a family health matter. “Unfortunately, I will not play in the Masters Tournament next week and will be out for an extended period of time as my family continues to navigate a personal health matter,” the three-time Masters champion shared in a statement on social media on April 2. “I have great respect for Augusta National Golf Club, and it is definitely the most special week of the year.”
