Rising Fuel Prices Ignite Political Controversy in the U.S.

Washington, March 10: The surge in gasoline prices has sparked significant political debate among Democratic leaders in the United States. They have sharply criticized President Donald Trump’s ongoing conflict with Iran and are urging the White House to release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to alleviate the burden on the public.

Due to disruptions in energy supply from the Middle East, crude oil prices have exceeded $100 for the first time in four years. Currently, the price for a barrel of crude oil is nearing $120, leading to a rapid increase in fuel costs across the nation.

Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi stated that rising prices are directly impacting families already struggling with living expenses. He noted that in Illinois, the average fuel price has risen by about 50 cents per gallon in the last month due to Trump’s war with Iran. While Trump refers to this as a “very small price,” it has become a significant issue for families needing to fill their vehicles.

Krishnamoorthi emphasized that it is now clear the President initiated this conflict without a solid strategy or a plan to end the war, showing little concern for its impact on hardworking American citizens. He has called on the government to immediately release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, arguing that it could help control prices. He pointed out that oil was released from the reserve when the war in Ukraine began, making it perplexing that this is not being done now.

Michigan Congresswoman Haley Stevens also criticized the administration, stating that American families are bearing the financial consequences of this conflict. She highlighted that the Trump administration’s policies have consistently worsened the situation for American families. The combination of unstable trade tariffs and the war with Iran has increased global instability, making life more expensive for people in the U.S.

Stevens mentioned that the U.S. is spending nearly a billion dollars daily on this war, which is contributing to the rapid rise in oil and gas prices, as the administration has failed to accurately predict Iran’s potential response.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer has also appealed to the administration to release oil from the reserves, warning that the conflict with Iran is already causing energy costs to rise sharply nationwide. Schumer stated that the Strategic Petroleum Reserve was established for emergencies like this, allowing the U.S. to intervene when energy markets are affected by war or global crises. However, the Trump administration has refused to take this action.

The conflict with Iran began on February 28, and since then, fuel prices have increased by approximately 43 cents per gallon, reaching around $3.41 per gallon. In just one week, prices surged by about 14%, marking the highest level since 2024.

Disruptions to tanker traffic in the Strait of Hormuz have cut off nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply, leading to increased volatility in the energy market and rising fuel prices. Schumer urged the government to take immediate action, stating that Trump should release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to stabilize the market, reduce prices, and lessen the economic burden on American families.

Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin also criticized the administration’s approach to handling the conflict. He remarked, “President Trump has tried to portray himself as the ‘Peace President,’ but his actions tell a different story. By becoming embroiled in conflict with Iran, he has driven up fuel prices, cost American lives, and created risk and uncertainty in a volatile region. I am concerned that this is all happening without a clear strategy or endgame.”

Durbin warned that wars come with significant human and economic costs.

Meanwhile, the Democratic National Committee has also criticized the administration, stating that rising fuel prices represent a new economic burden for American families. Committee spokesperson Kendall Witmer noted that Trump appears disconnected from the daily struggles of ordinary citizens. Working families are forced to deplete their last savings to meet basic needs such as fuel, food, and healthcare.
