Detroit, August 2: Davis Riley has positioned himself well for a victory on the PGA Tour and a spot in the playoffs. He scored a remarkable 7-under 63 at the Detroit Golf Club, taking a one-shot lead with a total score of 15.
Riley finished his round with consecutive birdies, sinking a 54-foot putt on the 17th hole and a 10-foot putt on the 18th, tying for first place with Michael Brennan. The Rocket Classic and next week’s Wyndham Championship are the last two tournaments before the top 70 players qualify for the playoffs. Indian-origin player Akshay Bhatia (12th), Aaron Rai (35th), Sahil Theegala (42nd), and Indo-Canadian Sudarshan Yellamraju (53rd) are also in good positions to make the playoffs.
Riley is aiming for his third career win and his first since the Charles Schwab Challenge in 2024. He has missed the cut ten times, including last week at the 3M Open, and currently sits 146th in the FedEx Cup standings.
Earlier this season, Riley had a chance to win the Sony Open in Hawaii, where he led after the third round but finished sixth with a score of 71. Brennan had a fantastic round, scoring 64 with seven birdies, but missed a 9-foot putt on the 18th hole, costing him a share of the lead.
Rasmus Hojgaard (61), Chris Kirk (66), Rickie Fowler (67), and Cameron Young (68) are three shots behind. Before the final round on Sunday, Xander Schauffele (67) is in another group one stroke back. Hojgaard matched the course record with a score of 61, giving him the lead until Brennan’s birdie pushed him ahead.
Cameron Young, who finished second at The Open, faced challenges in his round, missing 11-foot putts on the first and third holes, settling for par. His drive on the second hole went right, landing on a high mound, forcing him to make par again.
Twenty-four-year-old Brennan, a former Wake Forest star, is seeking his second win. This is his first start as a professional, with his last victory at the Bank of Utah Championship last year.
Entering the tournament ranked 106th in the FedEx Cup standings, Brennan has a chance to secure his playoff spot. He made eight consecutive birdies on Thursday, just one shy of the PGA Tour record, scoring 65, followed by a 67 on Friday.
Hojgaard from Denmark is also aiming for his first PGA Tour win. He had struggled in his previous three tournaments but managed to reach the weekend with a score of 3 under in Detroit.
