Jaipur, 31 July — A retired customs officer was strangled to death by a vegetable vendor in the Ramnagariya area of Jaipur. Police investigations revealed that the accused committed the murder after seeing a bank balance message on the officer’s mobile phone. The accused vendor has been arrested.

Murder Uncovered After Suspicious Death
Deputy Commissioner of Police (East), Jaipur, Sanjeev Nain, informed that the incident took place at Lotus Villa in Jagatpura, under the Ramnagariya police station limits. Retired customs officer Omprakash Khobar (88) had been living alone in his flat for the past 14 years. Police received information about a dead body found in the flat. Upon reaching the scene, they discovered the body on the bed with scratch marks on the neck and the mobile phone missing.
Although the police initially conducted a postmortem and handed over the body to the family, a murder case was filed later by the officer’s daughter, Sushma, based on the findings in the report. The phone was found switched off, and the police began tracing its call data records (CDR). The postmortem report confirmed that Omprakash Khobar died due to suffocation caused by strangulation.
Rs 3 Lakh Transferred Online to Accused’s Account
Station Officer Chandrabhan stated that the CDR showed multiple online transactions on the day of the murder, transferring a total of ₹3 lakh from Khobar’s bank account to an account belonging to Kamlesh Kumar. Kamlesh, who ran a vegetable stall just outside the apartment, was taken into custody based on suspicion.
During questioning, Kamlesh initially misled the police and denied any knowledge of the money transfer. However, after being shown CCTV footage, bank transaction details, and other evidence, he confessed to the crime. Kamlesh Kumar (31), a resident of Kanota, was arrested.
Murder Motivated by Greed After Seeing Bank Balance
During interrogation, Kamlesh revealed that Omprakash Khobar often bought vegetables from his stall and made payments online. Upon noticing a large bank balance during one such transaction, Kamlesh became greedy and decided to kill him for money. He secretly recorded a video to capture the PIN during a transaction.
On the morning of 25 July, after a conversation at the stall, Khobar returned home. Kamlesh followed him into the apartment and entered the flat, where he strangled the retired officer and stole his phone. When domestic help Radha Devi arrived for work, she found the body on the bed and raised an alarm. Residents then shifted the body to the floor. Even after the incident, unaware of the suspicion, Kamlesh also arrived at the scene with others.
